POWELL — Nearly 20 individuals with sensory sensitivities received haircuts in a calm, understanding environment on August 11 during “Cuts for a Cause,” a sensory-friendly haircut event held at Barber Shop Social.
The event was made possible through the generous support of The Henrietta “Hetty” Cuzzer Charitable Trust, in partnership with Focus on Abilities, the political action committee that supports the levy efforts of the Delaware County Board of Developmental Disabilities.
For many families of individuals with developmental disabilities, a routine trip to the barber can be a source of significant anxiety. Cuts for a Cause was designed to remove that barrier, offering a patient, judgment-free space where attendees could get a haircut on their own terms.
The event’s impact was felt deeply by the families who attended.
“Getting a haircut can be an overwhelming experience for our son, and as a parent, you never know how it’s going to go,” said one parent of a Cuts for a Cause participant. “The sensory-friendly event gave him a space where he could feel comfortable, understood, and accepted just as he is.
“Seeing him relax and enjoy the experience meant so much to our family,” the parent said. “It wasn’t just about getting a haircut, it was about having a community that recognizes his needs, celebrates him for who he is, and makes sure he has the same opportunities to participate as everyone else.
“We left feeling supported and grateful to know that events like this exist for families like ours.”
Organizers say the strong turnout and positive response reflect a growing need for inclusive community events across Delaware County, and they hope to build on the event’s success in the future.
Cuts for a Cause is one of several initiatives from Focus on Abilities, a political action committee supporting DCBDD’s mission to expand opportunities and services for individuals with developmental disabilities in Delaware County.
Focus on Abilities is currently leading community outreach ahead of a new 1.8 mill levy vote on November 3.
