MOUNT VERNON — The residents of Ohio voted with a resounding “yes” to the passage of State Issue 3 on Tuesday.
The issue won 65.88% to 34.12%, according to final unofficial results from the Ohio Secretary of State. A total of 4,186,334 ballots were counted toward the issue.
The vote enshrines the state’s existing voter photo identification requirement as part of the Ohio Constitution. It will also establish identification requirements for other voting methods, including absentee voting.
Voters who support the issue have said it will prevent future voter fraud.
“(Ohio has) a fairly good system compared to some other states. We want to keep it that way. We want to maintain the integrity,” Fred Dailey, chairman of the Knox County Republican Party, previously told Knox Pages.
By placing the requirements in the Constitution, the amendment makes it more difficult for future lawmakers to change through ordinary legislation.
Voters must bring approved photo identification to the polls, which includes the following:
- A driver’s license or state identification card.
- A U.S. passport or passport card.
- A U.S. military identification card, an Ohio National Guard identification card or an identification card issued by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or its successor agency.
