SUNBURY — Big Walnut’s Lindsey Cochran, like most freshmen, had modest expectations going into last week’s Division II regional meet at Lexington.

It’s safe to say she exceeded all of them.

Cochran won both the 800 meter run and the 1,600 meter run. She also ran a leg of the winning 4×800 relay team, giving her three regional titles.

That’s not bad for an athlete who can’t yet drive herself to practice.

“I was just hoping to finish in the top five to get to state,” Cochran said after holding off Norwalk’s Xavia Immel to win the 800 in 2 minutes, 14.61 seconds.

Cochran is seeded sixth in the 800 and third in the 1,600 after clocking in at 4:56.63 at Lexington. The 4×800 team of Leighton Coey, Cochran, Kylie Cochran and Grace Buskirk is seeded second (9:14.12).

Buskirk will join Cochran in the 1,600, where she is seeded sixth (4:58.31). She’s seeded seventh in the 3,200 (10:51.72).

A junior, Buskirk will be making her first appearance at the OHSAA Track & Field State Championships this weekend. The meets will take place June 4 to 7 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at The Ohio State University.

“We want to show them what Big Walnut is,” Buskirk said.

The Golden Eagles won the regional team title with 76 points last week. Cochran and Buskirk are two of seven individuals who qualified for state. The 4×100 relay team also advanced.

“It’s going to be nice having so many teammates at state with us,” Cochran said.
