COLUMBUS – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is inviting passionate outdoor enthusiasts to apply for its next Natural Resources Officer recruit class.

Whether you’re an experienced law enforcement professional or someone eager to begin a meaningful career in public service, this is your opportunity to help protect Ohio’s natural spaces. Applications must be submitted by Aug. 9.

“Natural Resources Officers are essential to ensuring visitors can safely enjoy Ohio’s remarkable state parks, forests, preserves, and waterways,” ODNR Director Mary Mertz said. “Joining this team means choosing a career with purpose — one focused on service, stewardship, and making a real difference every day.”

Natural Resources Officers serve on the front lines of law enforcement, education, and public safety across Ohio’s outdoor spaces. Officers patrol scenic trails, assist visitors, protect wildlife and natural resources, and promote safe recreation on land and water.

Applicants can hear directly from current officers about their work by watching this video that highlights the variety of officer responsibilities in a typical day.

Candidates who move forward in the hiring process will complete a specialized ODNR training program tailored to natural resources enforcement. Recruits will then attend the Ohio Peace Officer Basic Training Academy.

Applicants who are already certified peace officers in Ohio will bypass the academy and transition directly into field training.

ODNR is seeking motivated individuals who enjoy active, outdoor work and want a career that blends conservation, community service, and law enforcement. Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be U.S. citizens, at least 21 years old, with a valid driver’s license.
  • Hold an associate degree or have 18 months of relevant experience/training in natural resources, natural science, criminal justice/law enforcement, or military police/investigative services.
  • Pass a background check, medical and psychological exams, a drug screening, and meet physical fitness and swim standards.
