DELAWARE — Two women were pronounced dead after first responders pulled them from the Scioto River Sunday night, according to the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities continue to search for two to three adult males believed to be in the river Monday morning.
The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office said a motorist saw a “clearly distraught” young child running along State Route 257 around 9 p.m. Sunday, and the motorist immediately called 9-1-1 after the child said his family was in the river.
“Multiple first responders arrived, and two adult females were pulled from the Scioto River,” the office said in a press release.
“They were taken to nearby hospitals where they were pronounced dead. Identities of the deceased will be released following notification of next of kin.”
The DCSO later told Delaware Source that Delaware County EMS took one woman to Dublin Methodist Hospital and the other to a Mount Carmel medical facility.
The child that flagged down the motorist and one other are in the care of Delaware County Job & Family Services, according to the release.
Multiple agencies responded and continue to respond to the scene alongside the DCSO, including:
- Fire departments from Concord Township, Liberty Township, Berlin Township, Tri-Township, Jerome Township, Scioto Township and Washington Township.
- Delaware County Emergency Medical Services
- Delaware County Emergency Management Agency
- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources
- And the following police departments: Cities of Delaware, Sunbury, Powell, Columbus, and the Village of Shawnee Hills.
The Columbus Police’s speciality dive team is also involved in the investigation.
The team, officially known as the Underwater Search and Recovery Unit, is a highly trained group of officers who respond to drowning emergencies, recover missing persons, and process underwater crime scenes for evidence like firearms or vehicles.
