COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Geological Survey is inviting Ohioans of all ages to Ohio Geology Discovery Day on Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Horace R. Collins Laboratory and Core Repository, located at Alum Creek State Park.

“Geology is ingrained in Ohio’s economy, culture, and heritage,” said Chief D. Mark Jones, Division of Geological Survey. “We look forward to sharing our knowledge about Ohio geology at this special event.”

The event is free and perfect for learners of all ages who are excited about rocks, minerals, fossils, and more. During the open house hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., visitors can engage in hands-on learning activities throughout the H. R. Collins Laboratory.

The Division of Geological Survey has partnered with several educational institutions from across Ohio to provide activities and free giveaways. ODNR geologists will also provide rock, mineral, and fossil identification for the public.

In addition to the many activity stations, visitors can deepen their knowledge of Ohio’s geology by attending guided tours of this unique facility, offered every 30 minutes.

The H. R. Collins Laboratory and Core Repository is a multi-use facility that houses the Ohio Geological Sample Repository and the Ohio Seismic Network.

Dedicated on Oct. 12, 1999, the facility provides citizens, industry personnel, and researchers a climate-controlled environment conducive for the study of repository holdings.

Scientific studies that can be conducted in the facility include core and sample description and analysis, petrographic studies, aggregate testing, and sedimentation research.
