DELAWARE — A Delaware man was taken into custody Monday after an Ohio Wesleyan University student reported being threatened with a gun has been identified and charged with a felony weapons offense.
Alphonso Jai Johnson, 50, was charged Oct. 26 with having weapons while under disability, a third-degree felony, according to a criminal complaint filed in Delaware County Common Pleas Court.
Newly-filed court documents provide additional details about the encounter that prompted a police response and subsequent search warrant at a Spring Street residence Monday morning.
Law enforcement served a search warrant at 72 Spring Street around 8:30 a.m. on Monday after Johnson allegedly confronted a male Ohio Wesleyan student near the front of the Spring Street property around 1:30 a.m.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Johnson asked the student if he knew any female students interested in buying cocaine.
During the encounter, the student reported seeing Johnson allegedly place a bottle of liquor on a concrete stoop and pull out a wallet containing a large amount of cash.
The student also told police the man lifted his shirt, revealing two firearms, one on each side of his waist. Johnson then allegedly “pulled out a gun, cocked it back and had it pointed towards [the student’s] direction.”
“If you send the police, I will shoot you,” Johnson allegedly said, according to the student’s account.
Police subsequently located Johnson and arrested him on an active felony warrant.
Police’s search of Johnson “yielded two loaded and concealed firearms, one in each of his pockets, that Johnson knowingly had while being a fugitive from justice and being disabled due to the legal process,” according to the affidavit.
The criminal complaint specifies that authorities recovered two pistols, a Ruger P95 and a Ruger RXM.
According to the criminal complaint and online court records, Johnson was already facing two third-degree felony counts of having weapons while under disability and one third-degree felony count of cocaine possession from Oct. 14.
The affidavit states that Johnson denied interacting with any college student Monday and that Johnson said “he would continue to carry firearms.”
