DELAWARE — The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Geological Survey is inviting Ohioans of all ages to Ohio Geology Discovery Day on Saturday, June 13, at the Horace R. Collins Laboratory and Core Repository at Alum Creek State Park.
This America 250 event is free and perfect for learners of all ages who are excited about rocks, minerals, fossils, and more.
During the open house hours between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., visitors can engage in hands-on learning activities such as a fossil stamping activity, an AR (augmented reality) sand topography table, and so much more.
“Geology is ingrained in Ohio’s economy, culture, and heritage,” said ODNR Division of Geological Survey Chief, D. Mark Jones. “We look forward to sharing our knowledge about Ohio geology at this special event.”
The Division of Geological Survey will host a variety of events, like Ohio Geology Discovery Day and Earth Science Summer, to celebrate America 250 and Ohio’s rich geologic history.

The Division of Geological Survey has partnered with several educational institutions from across Ohio to provide activities and free giveaways. ODNR geologists will also provide rock, mineral, and fossil identification for the public.
In addition to the many activity stations, visitors can deepen their knowledge of Ohio’s geology by attending guided tours of the unique facility.
H. R. Collins Laboratory and Core Repository
The H. R. Collins Laboratory and Core Repository is a multi-use facility that houses the Ohio Geological Sample Repository and the Ohio Seismic Network.
Dedicated on Oct. 12, 1999, the facility provides citizens, industry personnel, and researchers a climate-controlled environment conducive for the study of repository holding.
Scientific studies that can be conducted in the facility include core and sample description and analysis, petrographic studies, aggregate testing, and sedimentation research.
